New sponsor form requires credit checks for family immigration petitions

Aug 31, 2026

The Trump administration released an updated Form I-864 Affidavit of Support on August 31, 2026, which now requires sponsors to authorize USCIS and DHS to access their consumer credit reports. The form has long been used to show sponsors can financially support intending immigrants and prevent them from becoming a public charge. Existing obligations, including income thresholds and address reporting requirements, remain in place alongside the new credit check provision.
