Since the U.S. ended Temporary Protected Status for Haitians in late July 2026, more than 450 people have been deported to Haiti, according to Haiti's National Office for Migration, with many sent to Cap-Haïtien on flights that have increased from monthly to weekly. Human Rights Watch interviewed 44 deportees who described being detained without explanation, some with pending asylum claims they could not pursue, and arriving with few belongings after being held in poor conditions in U.S. detention facilities. Haitian authorities said they lack the funding, staff, and infrastructure to safely receive and support deportees, who are given a meal, a drink, and about $77 in cash before being left to fend for themselves in a country facing severe gang violence and hunger. Many interviewees had lived and worked in the U.S. for years, some with U.S. citizen children, and expressed fear of being killed after returning to areas controlled by criminal groups.
