5,000 Minnesota refugees and asylum seekers lose Medicaid under new Trump-era law
Sep 4, 2025·Location: Minneapolis, MN
Starting this week, more than 5,000 noncitizen adults in Minnesota will lose federally funded Medicaid coverage due to changes in a tax and spending law signed by President Trump in July. The law ends Medicaid eligibility for many immigrants with legal status who lack green cards, including refugees, asylees, Afghan and Ukrainian humanitarian parolees, trafficking victims, and VAWA-protected noncitizens. Minnesota officials say most affected individuals may qualify for MinnesotaCare, but advocates warn some could be left without coverage.
