Border Patrol arrests 10 protecting ancient cottonwood tree at border wall site
Oct 5, 2026·Location: Lochiel, AZ

Border Patrol agents arrested 10 protestors and cited 10 more Monday morning in Lochiel, Arizona, after tearing down an ancient cottonwood tree that activists had defended in a 'tree sit' since late July. Protestors said about 200 agents arrived around 6:30 a.m. during a sunrise prayer and meditation session, entering private property without a warrant, and pulled one activist from the tree's branches using a cherry picker before excavating the roughly 200-year-old cottonwood. The tree sit had blocked construction of a double-layer border wall stretching 27 miles through the San Rafael Valley under a $334 million CBP contract. Three other protestors were previously arrested by Cochise County sheriff's deputies in September and charged with disorderly conduct for protesting the construction.
