Attorneys for immigrants detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma say a new unwritten policy now requires lawyers from Alaska, Oregon, and Idaho to appear in person for bond hearings instead of by videoconference. The change, which began around August 17, 2025, imposes costly travel burdens that attorneys say leave many detainees without legal representation and more vulnerable to deportation. The Justice Department's immigration court office denies a blanket ban, saying judges decide video appearance requests case-by-case.
