Gustavo (a pseudonym), a plumber from Monterrey, Mexico, lived 27 years in Houston with his wife and their 13-year-old son, both U.S. citizens. On September 3, 2026, ICE pulled up to the building where he was working and rounded up everyone there. His work visa had been revoked, and he was told he now faces a 10-year bar from returning. He was held nine days, most of them at the GEO Group-run Joe Corley Processing Center in Conroe, Texas. "They put you in the icebox for hours, in the meantime we're falling asleep in the filth. No one cleaning it," he said. "I was healthy when I went into that place and I came out of there sick." He developed a fever, a sore throat and an eye infection and lost 10 pounds. Before his removal flight, he and other men were kept shackled on a bus for 10 hours without a toilet because the plane was not working. "The plane, the most brutal people. For hours under chains, no bathroom breaks." He was flown to Tapachula, Mexico, about September 11, and HUMSI met him there two days later.
