Since November, Butler County Sheriff's Office deputies have partnered with ICE under a 287(g) agreement to arrest 150 immigrants, many taken from construction sites. Construction industry representatives say longtime workers with no criminal record, some in the U.S. for 10 to 20 years, are being detained and deported, disrupting home building and driving up costs. KDKA's analysis of Deportation Data Project records shows 231 total ICE arrests in Butler County over the past two years, with 30 listed as convicted criminals, 23 with pending criminal charges, and 178 listed only as immigration violations. The sheriff receives $15,000 per quarter per deputy from DHS for 13 designated deputies, totaling $780,000 annually.
