The Trump administration announced a refugee admission cap of 17,500 people for fiscal year 2027, with most slots again reserved for white Afrikaners from South Africa. Refugee rights groups say the policy leaves thousands of vetted refugees from other countries stuck in dangerous situations. In fiscal year 2026, the U.S. admitted only 16,292 refugees total, nearly all Afrikaners except for five Afghans, down sharply from the 125,000 cap under the Biden administration.
