Fei Zheng and his 6-year-old son, Yuanxin, were detained during a routine check-in at ICE offices in New York City on Nov. 26, the third time Zheng had been detained since crossing into the U.S. with his son in April. Zheng was held at Orange County Correctional Facility while Yuanxin was transferred to Office of Refugee Resettlement custody, separating the father and son for weeks even though the boy had just started first grade at a public school. Over 200 people, many from the boy's school community, attended a protest in Astoria, Queens, over the family's separation. Zheng later decided to stop fighting his case so he could be reunited with his son, and the two were deported together to China, arriving there on a Friday night in December.
