Kelly Y.: Peoria sushi shop owner held 8 months by ICE, now free

Kelly Yu, who owns two West Valley sushi restaurants and has no criminal record, spent nearly eight months in ICE detention before a federal judge ordered her release.

Feb 20, 2026Peoria, AZCountry of origin: China

Kelly Yu, who owns and operates Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine in Glendale and Peoria, Arizona, was released from an ICE detention facility in Eloy after nearly eight months in custody. Yu had crossed the border without authorization more than 20 years ago, her asylum bid failed, and she had a final removal order, but ICE could not deport her because China had not issued travel documents. A federal judge granted a habeas corpus petition arguing her continued detention had become punitive since deportation was not imminent, citing a Supreme Court ruling limiting immigration detention to six months absent foreseeable removal. Supporters, including local Republican and Democratic leaders, say Yu has no criminal record and is active in her community; she has since returned to work at her restaurant.
