Alfredo 'Lelo' Juarez Zeferino, a prominent farm labor organizer in Washington's Skagit Valley, agreed to voluntary departure to Mexico after four months in ICE detention at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. Immigration agents arrested him on March 25 while he was on his way to work near the tulip fields of Skagit County, citing a 2018 deportation order his family says they were never notified about. That order stemmed from a 2015 traffic stop in Bellingham in which police pulled him over and called immigration enforcement; Juarez later sued the city for racial profiling and the city settled for $100,000. His attorney said a judge would have approved his $5,000 bond months ago but lacked jurisdiction to release him, and that prolonged detention and poor conditions led Juarez to give up his case rather than pursue asylum. His detention sparked repeated protests and vigils outside the Tacoma facility by union and immigrant rights groups, including his two U.S. citizen siblings who attended his hearings.
