Mirna B.: School custodian mistreated in ICE custody, deported to El Salvador

Mirna Benitez, a Virginia school custodian of 10 years, was detained at a surprise ICE appointment and held 10 days without a lawyer, suffering mockery, denied water, and a staph infection before being deported.

Dec 7, 2025North Chesterfield, VACountry of origin: El Salvador

Mirna Benitez, a Salvadoran woman who worked for 10 years as a custodian at a Fredericksburg-area public school, was detained by ICE on December 7, 2025, after an unusual off-hours appointment at the agency's North Chesterfield office. Despite living in the U.S. for nearly 13 years, attending regular check-ins, and holding a temporary work permit while her asylum case and a family-based petition were pending, she was handcuffed and held for 10 days. She said officers mocked her during a painful fingerprinting process, denied her water except from a toilet sink, let leaking waste water ruin her belongings, and never allowed her to speak with a lawyer. She developed a staph infection while being transferred between facilities in Virginia, Texas, and Louisiana before choosing deportation to El Salvador over continued detention.
