Abel: Texas stepfather adopting four U.S. citizen kids deported after panic attack

Abel (a pseudonym) married a U.S. citizen and was adopting her four children. When he walked away during a panic attack, police charged him with resisting arrest, and ICE sent him to Mexico.

Abel (a pseudonym), from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, met his wife, a U.S. citizen, online in 2023. He visited her on a visa and then lived with her in Texas for about six months, and he was in the process of adopting her four children, all U.S. citizens. During an emotional conversation, with him on his knees pleading with her, a bystander called the police. He had a panic attack and walked away quickly while his wife told the officer there was no problem. When police ordered him to stop, he stopped and put his phone and wallet on the car, and he was charged with resisting arrest, an arrest he calls false. He spent about two months in county jail and two weeks at the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe, where his requests for care for a broken, painful tooth were never answered. "A lot of people filled out the paper and nobody came," he said. Told that fighting his case could mean a year in detention, he accepted removal to Mexico. HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
