Josué: Honduran asylum seeker deported, then sought by gang that killed his sister

Josué (a pseudonym) turned himself in to seek asylum and was waiting for his hearing. Deported to Honduras after months locked up, he found the gang that killed his sister looking for him.

Josué (a pseudonym), a young Honduran man, turned himself in to the Border Patrol at Eagle Pass, Texas, in November 2023 and was released to wait for his asylum hearing in San Antonio. In October 2025 his then-partner accused him of a crime he denies. "I told them I wanted to see the evidence, the photographs, the videos, and they told me I couldn't," he said. On his lawyer's advice he took a plea to get out of county jail after 173 days, and was handed to ICE. He was held at the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Texas and a facility in Oklahoma, where requests for care went unanswered. When a guard withheld a diabetic cellmate's medication, Josué spoke up, though it got him locked in his cell. "It was forbidden, but I didn't care if they locked me up, because the kid got sick when he didn't get his pills." He accepted voluntary departure by video and was flown to Honduras in April 2026. "I was afraid, but I was more afraid of staying locked up in there than of going back to my country." In Honduras, the gang that had killed his sister came looking for him, and he left again, walking north. "It was a mistake to sign my deportation." He says that every day, life feels like it has no meaning. "Why live, if I'm living this?" He keeps going, he says, for his daughter. HUMSI met him in Palenque, Chiapas, in September 2026, the day he arrived on foot.
