An 18-year-old high school senior was pulled over by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper in Austin while driving home from a night shift at a fast-food restaurant. Body camera footage showed the trooper sending ICE a photo of the teen's ID through the encrypted app Signal, and an ICE agent replying "Detain" before taking him into custody. The teen was released after his attorney filed a habeas corpus petition. After the footage became public, a DPS deputy director warned officers to stop using third-party apps like Signal and WhatsApp to communicate with other agencies and directed them to use an approved platform instead.
