Since the start of President Trump's second term, ICE has arrested and detained more than 7,400 people in Utah, and nearly 95% were later transferred to detention facilities out of state, according to Deportation Data Project figures current as of Aug. 6, 2026. On average, Utahns arrested by ICE are moved through 4.6 different facilities during their detention, with one person taken from Salt Lake City through Wyoming, Nevada, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi before being deported to Guatemala, and another moved 19 times after being picked up in West Valley City before eventually being released. A third person arrested in West Valley City was transferred through Denver, Kansas City, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas and Arizona over 499 days before being deported to Somalia. Utah immigration attorneys say the transfers isolate detainees from their families, complicate access to legal counsel, and restrict due process, while a DHS spokesperson said detention decisions are made case-by-case and that detainees have phone access to contact families and attorneys.
