Andrei Gerdiukov, a Russian asylum seeker who fled persecution for opposing the war in Ukraine, has been held at the GEO Group-run Folkston ICE Processing Center in Georgia since February, after Border Patrol stopped his car during a vacation trip near Miami. He is in the third week of a hunger strike that began Oct. 6, has dropped from 205 to 184 pounds, and medical staff have threatened to force-feed him and other strikers through tubes if they do not start eating, according to his wife, Polina Chertushkina, who lives in Brooklyn. Chertushkina said her husband did not call her as usual after word spread among detainees' families that a man held in the facility's medical unit had died. Gerdiukov, who has no criminal record, had refused to sign voluntary departure papers during the traffic stop while his asylum case was pending.
