Oscar Bengal, a Dominican national, was shot by ICE officers in the Bronx, New York on October 8, 2026 during an attempted arrest, after officers said he drove his vehicle toward them while they tried to block him in. He was superficially struck in the neck, received first aid from officers, and was taken to a hospital before being transferred to a detention facility outside New York state. DHS said Bengal has prior criminal convictions and had previously been arrested by the NYPD in 2023 but released under the city's sanctuary policies, which the agency said has resulted in nearly 15,000 ICE detainers not being honored.
