Channel Ferro Badell, a transgender woman born in Uruguay who is a citizen of Argentina, has spent much of her life fleeing discrimination, trafficking and abuse. In six months in ICE custody she was taken to six facilities; "In every one, the situation is the same: Violence is tolerated within ICE," she wrote. At the South Texas ICE Processing Center, run by GEO Group, she slept in an open dorm with 70 men who called her crude names and said things like "I'll rape you tonight" and "I'll tear you to pieces." She said she sometimes went two or three days without eating because other detainees mocked the way she ate and sat or would not let her sit at the table. She was deported to Uruguay in August and, according to her friend Déa Thatcher, is being held in a prison there pending removal to Argentina. DHS denied the allegations of inhumane conditions.
