Irene Flores Mendoza, a transgender woman, suffers from PTSD and depression tied to her childhood in El Salvador, where, according to her attorney's filings, she was continually targeted for violence and threats by MS-13 gang members because she is transgender. She has been held for months in an isolation unit at a men's ICE facility in South Texas, even though, she says, a psychologist told her that her mental health conditions and medications mean she should not spend prolonged periods in segregation. She says that after so long there, "we see shadows and hear voices and suffer delirium." Earlier she was held in the transgender unit in Colorado before it closed, where, she said, staff treated her as Irene. At the South Texas facility, she says, staff call her by her former name, forbid makeup on pain of being sent to "the hole," give her no razors or hormones, and mock her.
