Audrey K., a woman from Cameroon, was deported by the United States to Equatorial Guinea and held for a month in a hotel in Malabo guarded by armed police. She said they were given no change of clothes and no menstrual hygiene supplies. When she asked an official about the way forward and whether she could seek asylum, he laughed and told her, "There is nothing like that here. The only option you have here is going back to your country." On May 27, Equatoguinean authorities returned her and five other refugees to their home countries, all of whom had U.S. court-ordered protection against return to those countries. She fled Cameroon again as soon as she was able and, as of June 2026, was in hiding in another country, where she faces deportation to Cameroon if authorities notice her.
