A gay man from Ghana is one of 40 cases Reuters documented of LGBT migrants granted U.S. legal protection who were deported to African countries that criminalize same-sex relations or are hostile to LGBT people. He was deported to Sierra Leone, where gay men can be sentenced to life in prison, and then forcibly repatriated. He has spent four months hiding in the forests of neighboring Togo, surviving on small sums of money sent by his mother. Most nights he sleeps on a blanket on the ground, taking cover in an abandoned, half-finished house when it rains.
