ICE detains 46 people outside Santa Clara County jail using public release lists

Mar 5, 2026 · Milpitas, CA

Between June 2025 and March 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained at least 46 people outside Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas by monitoring publicly posted inmate release lists. The detentions occurred despite Santa Clara County's sanctuary policies prohibiting cooperation with ICE. On March 4, 2026, approximately 80 protesters gathered at the facility to oppose the practice. Community leaders and county officials criticized the detentions, with some asserting that sheriff's deputies facilitated the practice by maintaining publicly available release information. The sheriff's office stated it does not cooperate with ICE.
