Central American asylum seeker detained and taken to Texas for two weeks, too terrified to return to construction job

Jan 2026 · Minneapolis, MN, Central America

Edwin, an asylum seeker from Central America with a valid work permit, was detained in early January and taken to Texas. He was released after two weeks but was too terrified to return to his construction job, which requires a 40-minute drive and outdoor work. His daughter also stopped working for three weeks due to fear before financial hardship forced her return. They received some support from Edwin's union and a friend bringing groceries, but Edwin said he was unsure what they would do long-term.
