Eritrean man chained so tightly on military plane to Panama he could not eat the sandwich offered to him

Feb 2025 · San Diego, CA, Eritrea

Yoel, a 32-year-old Protestant man from Eritrea, was expelled to Panama on a military plane. He was chained the entire flight. He said, 'We were offered a sandwich, but I couldn't eat it because my wrists were chained too close to my waist, and it was difficult to stretch to reach it.' In Panama, he was confined to his hotel room without access to his phone and not allowed to contact his family or a lawyer. He had no communication with the outside world for 19 days until the Red Cross gave him a three-minute phone call from the Darién detention center. He told Human Rights Watch the lack of an asylum interview and deportation without due process was very painful.
