Ricardo del Pino Olivera, 67, dies in Mexico seven months after deportation — death certificate lists nationality as 'unknown'

Ricardo del Pino Olivera, a 67-year-old Cuban man, was deported from the United States on July 3, 2025, after serving a 17-year sentence. On July 31, he applied for refugee status in Mexico. He struggled to find formal employment and access essential services. Only after the Amparito shelter in Villahermosa began advocating on his behalf did he receive access to advanced medical treatment. He was repeatedly hospitalized beginning on December 12. By early January he was severely malnourished and remained without legal documentation. Ricardo died on February 21, 2026. His death certificate listed his nationality as 'unknown.'
