Misslenys Hernandez Zabala, a Venezuelan asylum seeker with a valid work permit, was detained by ICE on March 20, 2026, while on her way to work in Nashville. She is nursing her 10-month-old son, Maximiliano, who is a U.S. citizen, and also cares for a 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old niece. Her partner said ICE agents asked her in Spanish where the baby was as she screamed about her son during the detention. The family came to the U.S. in 2021 seeking asylum and has attended all required court dates, with their next hearing scheduled for 2028. Advocates brought the baby to DHS offices requesting her release, but ICE refused, stating that breastfeeding is not grounds for release.
