Father deported to Ecuador after ICE arrest, leaving two young children and wife behind
June 2026 · New York, NY, Ecuador

Hermel, a migrant from Ecuador, was arrested by ICE and detained for nearly four months before signing voluntary departure paperwork and being returned to Ecuador. His wife Anita and two children—Scarleth, now 11, and Ashley, 3—remained in New York. Hermel's deportation devastated the family: Hermel reported his house is half-built and he is struggling emotionally. Anita has ended their four-year relationship, cannot find full-time work, and her debts are mounting as she struggles to support their children alone.
