Following a CalMatters investigation and student protests earlier this year, UC San Diego police did not reapply for the Department of Homeland Security's Operation Stonegarden grant for fiscal year 2026. University Communications confirmed that campus police have not participated in the program's activities since 2024, and an internal email from a vice chancellor stated the university will not apply for any future grants tied to immigration enforcement. The grant had provided officers with night vision equipment and federal overtime pay to assist Customs and Border Protection with surveillance near La Jolla, Black's Beach and Torrey Pines.
