Priciliano Trejo, a 29-year-old who had lived in the United States since age 3, was arrested in North Carolina in mid-June 2026 and transferred to Stewart Detention Center in Georgia. During his three weeks in ICE custody, Trejo became increasingly ill with leukemia symptoms—coughing up blood, experiencing severe pain, and developing a bruise that would not heal—but was not taken to a hospital until July 13, more than a week after requesting medical care. He fell into a coma two days later, and ICE released custody to his family. Trejo died on July 24, 2026. Advocates say medical neglect contributed to his death at a facility previously cited for deficiencies in suicide prevention and medical care protocols.
