Judge allows Trump administration to end TPS for South Sudanese nationals

Aug 7, 2026 · South Sudan

A federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that the Trump administration can proceed with terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudanese nationals in the United States. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling in June that allowed the administration to strip TPS protections from hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians. South Sudan, facing ongoing civil war and displacement of millions, originally received TPS designation in 2011. Immigrant advocacy organizations opposed the ruling, citing the country's dire humanitarian situation.
