Supreme Court authorizes Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for 1.3 million

Jun 29, 2026 · Haiti, Syria

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Trump administration can terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and Syria, affecting up to 1.3 million people who could face deportation. The decision overturned lower court rulings that found the terminations were motivated by racial animus, despite the U.S. government maintaining a Level 4 travel advisory for Haiti due to violence and instability. TPS, established in 1990, provides work authorization and deportation protection for people from countries experiencing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other dangers that make return unsafe.
