ICE plans to insure local police who arrest migrants under 287(g) deals

August 14, 2026

ICE is proposing to subsidize liability insurance for state and local police officers who are trained and deputized to make immigration arrests under 287(g) agreements. The plan would cover up to $500,000 in personal liability with a $250 annual reimbursement, aiming to ease local police reluctance to partner with ICE. Nearly 1,600 agencies in 32 states now participate in ICE's task force model, with arrests through these partnerships rising sharply under the Trump administration.
