Refugee admissions to U.S. plunge to record low under Trump

Aug 17, 2026

Refugee admissions to the U.S. have fallen sharply during President Trump's second term, with only 10,258 refugees admitted through the first 10 months of fiscal year 2026. The Trump administration set the admissions ceiling for this fiscal year at 17,500, the lowest cap since at least 2000. This marks a steep decline from 38,102 refugees admitted in fiscal 2025 and 100,034 in fiscal 2024 under President Biden.
