Federal data show ICE arrests reached record levels in mid-2026, with about 43,900 arrests in June, roughly 49,000-50,208 in July, and nearly 51,000 in August. DHS touted the totals as record-breaking for three consecutive months and highlighted individuals with convictions for crimes such as murder, child pornography, sexual assault, and drug trafficking. However, data obtained through a FOIA lawsuit by the Deportation Data Project and analyzed by The New York Times show that for the first time, more than half of those arrested in July had no criminal convictions or pending charges, with less than 4% having past violent convictions. Deportations also hit a record high of nearly 34,000 as the agency pushed toward a White House target of 2,000 arrests per day, aided by a $70 billion DHS funding increase, expanded detention space, and tactics like traffic stops, home and airport arrests, and expanded local police partnerships. Texas, Florida, Georgia, and California accounted for more than half of arrests, and in San Diego and Imperial counties arrests rose about 50% with 60% involving no criminal history. A DHS spokesperson said the administration is keeping its promise to arrest and deport criminals, while advocacy groups called the treatment inhumane and reported increased requests to locate detained relatives.
