His fiancé and pastor said he has a valid work permit, a pending asylum case, and had Temporary Protected Status, which ended July 27; DHS said he entered lawfully in 2020 but overstayed. His detention has drawn community support, including a Change.org petition and a GoFundMe that has raised over $13,000 for legal expenses.
