Detainees at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington, have filed more than 3,500 complaints with the Washington State Department of Health describing dangerous conditions, including worm-infested and rotten food, foul drinking water, black mold, and untreated medical conditions such as strokes and internal bleeding. Mergensana Amar, a 40-year-old asylum seeker, died by suicide in November 2018 after nearly 11 months in detention at the facility, and another detainee, Charles Leo Daniel, was later found dead there. GEO Group, which operates the facility under contract with ICE and reported more than $1.6 billion in revenue in 2024, has repeatedly refused to allow state inspectors into the facility despite the volume of complaints.
