New DHS rule caps F-1 student visa stays at four years

Jul 16, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule eliminating the 'duration of status' framework for F-1 student visas, which previously allowed foreign students to stay in the U.S. as long as they maintained a full course of study. Under the new regulation, F-1 students will be limited to a four-year admission period and must apply to renew their status with DHS afterward. DHS said the change addresses national security concerns tied to the student visa program.
