DHS narrows student visa work training rules, universities pause approvals
Aug 24, 2026
DHS's Student and Exchange Visitor Program issued new guidance narrowing when Curricular Practical Training can be considered an integral part of a degree program for F-1 visa holders. The University of Washington's International Student Services office announced it is pausing authorization of new CPT requests that are not required for all students in a degree program while it reviews the guidance. Students with existing CPT authorization must continue following the terms on their current Form I-20.
