Refugees and asylees nationwide face Medicaid loss Oct. 1 under new law
Oct 1, 2025·Location: Tucson, AZ
Hundreds of thousands of refugees, asylees and other legally present immigrants are losing full Medicaid coverage starting Oct. 1 under eligibility restrictions in the Trump administration's budget law, H.R. 1. In Arizona alone, the state Medicaid agency has notified 22,263 people likely affected, and doctors in Tucson say some patients, including cancer and prenatal care patients, could face life-threatening gaps in treatment. Advocates say the Trump administration has also stalled green card processing for many refugees, leaving them with no path to maintain coverage.
