Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old graphic artist from London, was backpacking across the US on a tourist visa, staying in homestays through Workaway in exchange for chores. When she tried to cross from Seattle into Canada on February 26, Canadian officials said her homestay arrangement required a work visa and sent her back to the US side, where officials interrogated her for hours and had her sign a lengthy statement without legal advice. She was then fingerprinted, stripped of her belongings, shackled, and transported overnight to an ICE detention facility in Tacoma, Washington, where she was held for 19 days despite having money for a flight home and wanting only to leave the country. Inside, she shared a dorm with over 100 other women from countries including Mexico, the Philippines, Russia, India, China, Iran, Afghanistan and Gaza, and became known as the unofficial artist-in-residence, drawing portraits for fellow detainees.
