Barbara Gomes Marques May, a 38-year-old Brazilian film director with no criminal record, was arrested by an ICE agent at a downtown Los Angeles immigration building after an official told her he needed to photocopy her passport, then led her away to be detained. She was transferred between detention facilities in Adelanto, Louisiana, and Arizona, during which she went more than 12 hours without food or water and lacked access to toilet paper, her husband said. Marques May, who had surgery this year for chronic back problems, was denied medical treatment for a device she uses to manage her pain. Her attorney filed motions to reopen and terminate her deportation proceedings after discovering a years-old removal order she never received notice of, and as of the article's publication she remained in ICE custody while her case proceeded.
