Kevin: Nashville hotel worker jailed 21 days without phone call, then deported

Kevin (a pseudonym) worked at the Gaylord hotel and an Italian restaurant in Nashville, where his U.S. citizen girlfriend lives. Jailed after a traffic stop, he was refused a call while officers laughed.

Kevin (a pseudonym) spent six years in the United States, three in New York and three in Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked at an Italian restaurant and a famous hotel. His brother, aunts and uncles and his girlfriend, a U.S. citizen, are still there. "Almost my whole family is there," he said. On February 8, 2026, police stopped him near Nashville, allegedly for speeding. The officer checked his Honduran ID and told him, "You're illegal," then called immigration, which arrived about 15 minutes later. He was held 21 days in the Cheatham County jail in Ashland City with no phone call, no visits, no public defender and no hearing. "I told him: if there's a way to pay bail, I'll pay, but give me a call. They didn't answer, they just looked at each other and laughed." He says his court date was pushed back until ICE had a group large enough to collect. After three days in a jail in Alabama and 15 days at a Louisiana facility he calls horrible, where a detainee who fainted got only a blood-pressure check and a pill, he was taken from his cell at midnight and deported to Honduras without seeing an immigration judge. "They're violating everyone's rights in there right now." HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
