Martín (a pseudonym), an Indigenous Mexican farmworker, lived 25 years in Morristown, Tennessee. Local police stopped his boss's truck, loaded with sweet potatoes and squash, because a rear tail light was out. He spent a week in county jail and was then handed to ICE and held in Alabama. Despite repeated requests, he got no evaluation or treatment for the constant dizziness and severe migraines left by an old eye injury. He went through two hearings before an immigration judge without a lawyer. Told an asylum case would take about two years, and hearing from other detainees that he could be held for months, he signed to leave the country. He said he was treated "like I'm nothing." He still worries about what he owes his boss for the lost load of produce. HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
