Edward Nalwamba, a 78-year-old Ugandan priest who has lived in Colorado for more than two decades, was released from a GEO-operated ICE detention facility in Aurora after a federal judge granted his habeas petition challenging his continued detention. After 13 months in custody, Nalwamba said he could no longer walk and had to be carried out of the facility by two fellow detainees after staff would not allow him to use a wheelchair beyond the facility's gate. His attorney, Joy Athanasiou, said he entered detention in good health and able to do 15 to 20 push-ups, but was diagnosed with pneumonia in January, lost more than 30 pounds, collapsed in custody, and has suffered an ongoing respiratory illness since June that she says ICE failed to adequately test or treat. Sen. John Hickenlooper's office said GEO staff had assured them Nalwamba would be allowed a phone call to his caretakers and a wheelchair for his release, but neither was provided.
