Lawmakers demand DHS data on citizen detentions

U.S. Representative Lou Correa led 39 House colleagues in a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin demanding answers about the detention of U.S. citizens during immigration enforcement operations. The letter cites reporting that more than 500 U.S. citizens have been detained by federal immigration authorities since January 2025, including over 100 questioned about their citizenship. The lawmakers asked DHS to clarify how many citizens have been detained or arrested, what documentation is required to prove citizenship, and what training officers receive to determine citizenship status, noting DHS has not provided consistent answers despite repeated congressional requests.
