Tunde O., a pastor and nurse practitioner from Nigeria, lived in the United States for 20 years and has three U.S. citizen children and numerous grandchildren. An immigration judge granted him deferral of removal under the Convention against Torture in 2011, and he had checked in with ICE since then. He was detained during a routine check-in and sent from Wisconsin to a detention facility in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. His lawyer, Erica Reilly, asked his deportation officer whether she or her client had any say in the country of removal and was told "very clearly" that they did not. On June 18, 2026, he was deported to Sierra Leone with about a dozen other West Africans who were not Sierra Leonean. A government official there told him Nigeria would verify his nationality and "facilitate his return," and that he would be repatriated within 14 days; in the meantime he could walk outside only with an official accompanying him. By July 1 he had been returned to Nigeria.
