Grace K., a 26-year-old woman, was arrested crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in January 2025 and held for ten days in what she thought was a Customs and Border Protection holding cell, where "We slept on the floor. It was very cold." She was then transferred to the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson, Texas, where she said conditions were deplorable. She arrived with hypothyroidism and never received treatment for it: "I was always cold, my eyes hurt, and [parts of her body] wouldn't stop swelling." An immigration judge found her credible for asylum, but a DHS lawyer argued that her January 2025 border crossing barred it, so she received withholding of removal instead. She was deported to Cameroon in 2026.
