LT, a 30-year-old asylum seeker from Haiti, was detained at the Dilley detention center in Texas, 1,500 miles from her 13-month-old daughter in Florida. Her baby is allergic to formula and has food sensitivities, causing constant vomiting. The government denied her request to pump and mail breastmilk. It also denied her request to bring the child into detention, saying a US citizen child cannot be kept at an immigration detention center. LT fled Haiti after supporters of an opposing political party burned down her house, kidnapped her, and raped her. She arrived by boat in Miami in 2019. Her sister was murdered in Haiti last year. LT's mother is watching the child but cannot work full time while caring for an infant with complicated medical needs.
