Venezuelan asylum seeker arrested at routine ICE check-in, separated from two-year-old son

Oct 2025 · Dilley, TX, Venezuela

EFA, an asylum seeker from Venezuela, was arrested at a routine ICE check-in appointment in October 2025 and detained at the Dilley detention center. Before her arrest, she and her husband had arranged their work schedules so one parent was always home with their two-year-old son. Her husband, also an asylum seeker, fears he too will be detained, leaving their son without a guardian. Their church congregation organized a childcare rotation. EFA and her husband fled political violence in Venezuela and are reluctant to take their son back. If deported, she would be barred from re-entering the US for a decade. There are no Venezuelan consulates in the US for her husband to obtain travel documents.
